Founded in 1912 by explosives manufacturer DuPont co, the town has long been an influential community in the region. Between 1909 and 1976 the area was home to a DuPont explosives factory, supplying projects such as the Panama Canal, the Alaska Railroad, and the Coulee Dam. Due to its location on Puget Sound, Dupont also housed a busy shipping port which became instrumental in Alaska's mining industry.
