Step 19: Give Notice to Your Landlord

If you are currently renting, you will need to give notice to your landlord that you are going to be moving out. Typically it is a 30 day notice that will need to be given. However, what if your lease isn’t quite up before you need to move? Here are some of your options to handle that:

  1. We can try to push the closing date back to the end of your lease date. If this is something that you would like to do, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
  2. You can find a subleaser for your apartment for the remainder of your lease. Check with your apartment about what their rules are for subleasing. Just remember that some parts of the year are easier to find people than others.
  3. You could choose to hold onto your rental for the remainder of your lease, allowing for a leisurely transition over to your new home. However, keep in mind that this means you will have to continue to pay rent until your lease is up, on top of paying your mortgage payment.
